North Madison Congregational Church, an Open and Affirming Congregation, seeks a part-time Director of Christian Education. NMCC is a dynamic and active congregation on the Connecticut shoreline looking for an energetic, creative, and flexible individual to lead our faith formation programs.

NMCC seeks someone committed to progressive Christian faith who will cultivate a positive relationship with children, youth and families so that church is a place where they feel loved and valued on their faith journey. We have young people who are thoughtful and deeply committed to serving God and community through a wide range of activities and projects. Our DCE will foster a vibrant, safe and theologically progressive space where their curiosity can flourish.

This position reports directly to the Senior Pastor and collaborates closely with the Board of Christian Education.This is a half time position with great staff and congregational support. 

Responsibilities:

• Maintain a year-round program for the children and youth, including intergenerational activities, multi-level Sunday school classes and regular Youth group meetings. There are approximately 15 active participants with an additional 10 that float in and out.

  • Plan all classes, meetings and events of the program, including record keeping, current enrollment, and guidance for students and parents engaged in the faith formation process as well as monitoring the physical facilities. 

    • Events include, but are not limited to: overnights with service projects, monthly youth group meetings, confirmation classes and related service activities

• Maintain regular communication with students, families and church membership on programs and schedules through bulletins, newsletters, text messages, including a proficiency with current digital, communication, and social media tools.

• Meet regularly with the Senior Pastor to discuss matters of mutual concern and program planning. 

•  Meet regularly with the Board of Christian Education and attend staff meetings.

• Attend monthly NMCC staff meetings.

•  Select curriculum materials as well as all other items for budget consideration or expense for approval by the Board of Christian Education.

• Collaborate with the Senior Pastor, Board of Christian Education, staff, and other boards and teams to provide meaningful activities that promote faith formation across the life span.

• Recruit and support volunteers following the NMCC Safe Conduct Policy.  

• Be responsible for seeing that students have transportation to and from off-campus events according to SafeConduct Policy.

• Represent the NMCC in regional activities related to the children's and youth faith formation.

• Adhere to the NMCC organizational norms, purpose statement, Open and Affirming Covenant, personnel policies and SafeConduct policies. 

Professional Growth & Continuing Education:

• Engage in educational opportunities (webinar, course, workshop, conference, and/or other form of continuing education). 

• Willing to attend New England Association of United Church Educators

Personal Qualifications:

• An effective communicator, who is organized, self-directed, collaborative, and innovative 

• Passes a criminal and driver background check

Professional Qualifications:

• Academic training in religious education and theology, child development, education, or community organizing

• Experience in Christian Education is a plus

Position Details & Salary:

• Reports to Senior Pastor

• 20 hours per week to include specific office hours

• Great opportunity for flexible scheduling, although Sunday mornings onsite are required

• 48 weeks of work and 4 weeks of paid vacation annually

• Salary of $30,000 per year

• $500 stipend for continuing education expenses

• Start date: ASAP​
